The amount of harmful compounds in the city air has decreased. Khmelnytskyi city has earned more than UAH 6 million per four years on power production from landfill gas produced at the local municipal solid waste landfill.
Deputy Mayor of Khmelnytskyi Mykola Vavryshchuk told on his Facebook page how much money the city’s utility company earned from processing natural methane gas at the landfill.
According to him, 80 wells 12 meters deep were drilled at the landfill, from which the biogas plant pumps out gas and processes it into power. Then the utility company “Spetskomuntrans” sells the energy to the grid at a “green tariff”.
“The plant pumps out 300 m³ of methane per hour, after processing it is about 500 kW of electricity. The agreement stipulates that 13% of the funds received are received by the utility company “Spetskomuntrans”, said Vavryshchuk.
In total, during the plant operation, more than 9,500,000 kWh was generated, and the proceeds from LLC “Biogas Energy” amounted to more than UAH 6 million. In 2021 alone, the company earned UAH 2 million. The funds, as the deputy mayor added, are used for the needs of the Khmelnytskyi landfill.
It is noted that the city did not spend money on the complex itself, as it is an investment.
Vavryshchuk also added that according to the report on implementing the “Action Plan for Sustainable Energy Development of Khmelnytskyi cіty” for 2016-2020, CO2 emissions were reduced by 405,032 tons.
In addition to reducing harmful compounds in the air, the number of fires has decreased due to the operation of the biogas plant at the landfill.
